Louise Nevelson Lesson Plan for 3rd
Grade
SUBJECT: All Boxed Up (Wall
Sculpture)
GRADE: Third or Fourth Grade
(I did it with 3rd grade and it was successful).
STATE STANDARDS:
OBJECTIVE: Learn about a famous
female artist, Louise Nevelson. Increase motor movements building boxes
from a template. Understand the use of symmetry and placement while creating
a wall sculpture.
VOCABULARY: Symmetry, Complimentary
Colors, Louise Nevelson, Template, Placement, Relief Sculpture, Three
Dimensional and Two Dimensional.
PROCESS:
1. Lecture on Louise Nevelson and hold a class discussion involving the
vocabulary words. Brief description of Nevelsons Art and photos
of her, would be a great attention grabber.
2. Pass out templates which you have cut out prior to class. Use 12x12
tagboard and cut four lines.
3. Demonstrate how to trace the template one step at a time by folding
over one piece and tracing each line to be cut.
4. Demonstrate creasing each fold. There should be 8 creases when finished
with this step. Have the students fold as you demonstrate.
5. Demonstrate folding into a box and glue sides together. If you have
one or two students who "pick up" on this process, ask them
to assist you in helping other students.
6. Each box should contain 3D paper shapes/designs, created by the students
(see photo on page 2). The 3D shapes/designs, should be made from paper
which is a complimentary color to the paper used for the box. The 3D shapes/designs,
must stick out of the box in some way shape or
form.
7. Use masking tape to connect four poster boards edge to edge (same color
as the 3D shapes/designs). Strategically place the boxes on the (4) posterboards
creating a Balanced Wall Sculpture.
8. You may have to make an extra box or two to balance the project, and
you need to make one box out of the posterboard color as a counteractive
piece to place in the bottom corner of the project to "guide the
eye". This final box should be empty, no 3D shapes or designs attached.
9. I had three third grade classes successfully create this project. The
principal allowed me to have the project permanently displayed on the
school wall.
