Artist Quotes

Grade Level: 4 through 12

Objectives: Students will be able to:
1. identify and research a variety of artists and their styles
2. select a quote by a specific artist
3. be able to create a border to frame a quote that represents the artist's style
4. select a letter and illuminate it to reflect the artist and his/her style
5. choose a medium that will best demonstrate the artist, such as print making, painting, collage, drawing, etc.
(Standards: Show-Me Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 3.4, 4.1, FA 1,2,5)
Introduction/Motivation:
Distribute books and magazines that describe a variety of artists, direct students to share information and select an artist they are interested in researching. Discuss the significance of quotes, including historical and societal impact. Encourage students to share ideas about the meaning of symbols used in art and how they might depict an artist quote with a related symbol.

Materials:
books and magazines about artists / a collection of quotes by artists / computers and access to the web / printmaking supplies / pencils / paint and related supplies / construction paper / scissors / glue / markers / colored pencils / crayons
Procedure:
Students select an artist and a quote by the artist.
Students must identify the artist's style and relate entire project to this style. The quote is printed in a particular font using computer or the student uses lettering techniques to manually letter quote.
Students will select an appropriate beginning style of lettering for illumination of the first letter in the quote.
Students use marker, paint, cut paper, crayon, printmaking, or any combination of media to create illuminated letter.
Students design a border to frame the quote that reflects the style of the artist using marker, paint, cut paper, crayon, printmaking , or any combination of media.
