AUSTRALIAN
ABORIGINAL ART DRAWINGS
Lori Atkins
Buchanan County R-IV
GRADE LEVEL: 6-8
MATERIALS: newsprint, large
crayons or markers, pencils
12x18 black construction paper. bleach, cotton swabs, oil pastels
INTRODUCTION:
Have students view examples of Australian Aboriginal art including both
"x-ray style" and "dot" painting. Discuss symbolism
and meaning in each type of art. The teacher may provide students with
handouts of basic skeletal structures and symbols used in dot painting
or require that students research examples on their own.
PROCEDURE:
Students may plan their drawing based on "x-ray style", "dot"
painting, or a combination of the two. A preliminary drawing should be
done on newsprint with large markers or crayons. A final drawing is done
on black construction paper using a pencil. Using a cotton swab, students
should carefully apply bleach over their drawn pencil lines. Allow bleach
to dry about 15 minutes. Apply color using oil pastels over bleached areas.
RESOURCES:
